What is my favorite post of 2024? While many contenders vied for this coveted spot, I’d have to say it would be Course Notes: The ADHD Brain.
At the beginning of the year, I found myself needing professional direction during a lull in my career. Becoming an ADHD Certified Rehabilitation Services Provider (ADHD-RSP) seemed like the perfect jumpstart. If I’m being honest, I believed this certification would just review what I already knew about ADHD, given my extensive experience treating children with the diagnosis. I was wrong.
Prior to taking this certification course, I had no idea how complex and nuanced ADHD really is. I felt that many kids were being over diagnosed and unnecessarily prescribed medication. I thought symptoms affecting function could be addressed without medication and if I taught them the skills they needed in the clinic, they could apply them in any environment. Like many others, I was misinformed and my sentiments unfortunately echoed the reputation and stigma surrounding ADHD and medication.
The latest research on the disorder not only shows how the ADHD brain is biologically different than the norm, but that medications, combined with behavioral strategies integrated into daily routines, are the most effective. This new information prompted me to reexamine my knowledge, my perceptions of the disorder, and how I address the challenges faced by my clients. I now have a deeper appreciation for the role of medication and the complexities involved in achieving the right dosing and consistency to support daily activities.
The process has been an eye-opener but made me a better OT and advocate for those with ADHD.
